4 panel illustrations and typography completed as part of the Tai Timu Tai Pari exhibition held at the Cargo Shed Tauranga in 2023.
4 tidal movements.
4 panels of glass.
4 four cardinal directions.
4 fingers on corrugated iron.
4 legs, arms, eyes, ears.
4 typefaces.
4 slices of cheese.
Each illustration is a reflection of a section of the journey Dale’s youngest son and he take, from Sulphur Point to the Strand Reserve playground. These journeys and this place emotionally reflect the rising and falling of the tides. With his boy excited to begin, excited to journey and hopefully see Taraka, Tereina, Aki Aki, Pahi, and all manner of other 2-year-old delights. To the journey home, tired, grumpy, wanting his Mummy and a little bottle.
Tai Timu Tai Pari speaks to Sattler as a parent, where his child is hopefully the best of him, rising with his successes and learning from his failures. Children are wrapped by their parents like the land is wrapped by the flood tide, and slowly as they age, they ebb the tide away, becoming their own. For his youngest, the tide is still in. For his oldest, the tide is halfway out. He already misses him.
